Description:
The Albino Pepper Cory, a variant of Corydoras paleatus, is a captivating freshwater catfish known for its striking albino coloration and peaceful temperament. With its pale, almost translucent body and distinctive red eyes, this fish is a unique and attractive addition to any aquarium.
Appearance:
The Albino Pepper Cory features a light, almost pinkish-white body due to the lack of pigmentation. Its body is adorned with subtle, pepper-like speckles, though these may be less pronounced compared to its non-albino counterparts. The red eyes, a hallmark of albinism, stand out prominently. The fish has a typical Corydoras shape: a short, stocky body with a rounded snout and barbels around the mouth, which it uses for foraging along the substrate.
Size:
When fully grown, Albino Pepper Corys can reach up to 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) in length. The "XL" designation indicates that the fish is around 5 cm (2 inches), making it a mature size suitable for most aquariums.
Habitat and Origin:
Originally from the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America, particularly in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, the Albino Pepper Cory thrives in environments with soft, sandy substrates and plenty of plant cover. These conditions mimic their natural habitat, providing ample hiding spots and foraging opportunities.
Diet:
Albino Pepper Corys are omnivores and have a varied diet. In an aquarium, they should be fed high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and a variety of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also scavenge for leftover food, helping to keep the tank clean.
Behavior and Compatibility:
Known for their peaceful and social nature, Albino Pepper Corys prefer to live in groups. Keeping them in schools of at least six individuals is recommended to promote natural behavior and reduce stress. They are excellent tank mates for other small, non-aggressive fish, making them ideal for community aquariums.
Aquarium Requirements:
To create an ideal environment for Albino Pepper Corys, a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood, rocks, and caves is recommended. A soft, sandy substrate is ideal to prevent damage to their sensitive barbels. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a small school of Corys. Maintain a water temperature of 72-78°F (22-26°C) with a pH level of 6.0-7.5. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.
