Gold Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi var. "Gold") - 4.5cm

Description:

The Gold Ram is a vibrant variant of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, distinguished by its stunning golden-yellow coloration. This freshwater cichlid is known for its eye-catching appearance and relatively peaceful temperament, making it a popular choice among aquarists.

Appearance:

The Gold Ram features a bright golden-yellow body that shimmers under aquarium lighting. The coloration is typically uniform across the body, with some variations of intensity and brightness. The fish has a compact, oval-shaped body with flowing dorsal and anal fins that may exhibit hints of orange or red. The eyes are large and expressive, adding to its overall appeal. The Gold Ram's vivid coloration is especially striking when they are in good health and well-cared for.

Size:

At 4.5 cm (approximately 1.8 inches), the Gold Ram is a juvenile, approaching its full adult size. Adult Gold Rams typically reach about 2.5-3 inches (6-7.5 cm) in length.

Habitat and Origin:

Native to the slow-moving waters of the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela and Colombia, Gold Rams prefer warm, slightly acidic water conditions. They inhabit shallow streams and lagoons with sandy or muddy substrates, which provide ample hiding spots and foraging opportunities.

Diet:

Gold Rams are omnivores and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. In an aquarium, they should be fed high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A balanced diet is crucial for their growth and coloration.

Behavior and Compatibility:

Gold Rams are known for their peaceful and somewhat territorial nature, particularly during breeding. They are generally compatible with other small, non-aggressive fish. A well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, such as driftwood, rocks, and caves, helps to create a stress-free environment. Keeping them in pairs or small groups can promote natural social behavior and reduce stress.

Aquarium Requirements:

To accommodate Gold Rams, a well-planted aquarium of at least 20 gallons is recommended. The water should be maintained at a temperature of 78-85°F (25-29°C) with a pH level of 5.5-7.0. Soft, slightly acidic water conditions are ideal. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality and support the health of these delicate fish.
