Description:

The Panda Cory, scientifically known as Corydoras panda, is a charming and popular freshwater catfish species among aquarists. Named for its distinct black and white coloration resembling that of a panda bear, this fish adds a playful and visually appealing element to any aquarium.

Appearance:

The Panda Cory is easily recognizable by its white to pale pinkish body adorned with prominent black markings. Notably, it has a black patch over its eyes, a black spot at the base of its dorsal fin, and another at the base of its tail, creating the signature "panda" look. Its body is short and stocky, with a rounded snout and barbels around the mouth, which it uses to forage along the substrate.

Size:

Panda Corys are small, typically reaching about 3.5-4cm in length, making them suitable for smaller aquariums.

Habitat and Origin:

Native to the clear, shallow waters of Peru's upper Amazon Basin, particularly in the Rio Ucayali drainage, Panda Corys thrive in areas with soft, sandy substrates and ample plant cover. These environments provide plenty of hiding spots and places to forage for food.

Diet:

Panda Corys are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet. In an aquarium setting, they should be fed high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and a variety of live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also scavenge for leftover food, contributing to the cleanliness of the tank.

Behavior and Compatibility:

Panda Corys are known for their peaceful and social nature. They prefer to live in groups, so it is recommended to keep them in schools of at least six individuals. This social behavior helps reduce stress and encourages natural, playful interactions. They are excellent tank mates for other small, non-aggressive fish, making them ideal for community aquariums.

Aquarium Requirements:

To create a suitable environment for Panda Corys, a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood, rocks, and caves is recommended. A soft, sandy substrate is ideal to protect their delicate barbels. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a small school of Panda Corys. Maintain a water temperature of 72-78°F (22-26°C) with a pH level of 6.0-7.5. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to keep the water clean and healthy.
